“Hunting”, “Fishing” and “Trawling” for leaders among our Military Veterans….The hidden gems in our society
The leadership skills of military personal have “significantly higher proficiency ratings compared to average U.S industry leader ratings” according to a study conducted by the The Center for Creative Leadership, This is probably not a surprise to many. I would like to know how the UK are currently identifying veterans of our armed forces for potential leadership roles?
There are stark differences between the US Armed Forces and the UK Armed forces on how ex-serviceman are transitioned into civilian careers, how this is orchestrated is much clearer in the USA than the UK. The USA is far more transparent in how they are addressing this, for example Veterans job mission
According to the study for the Center for Creative Leadership, the top 6 competencies you would want to see in a leader are:
- Building collaborative relationships
- Leading employees
- Strategic perspective
- Taking initiative
- Participative management
- Change management
Translating skills from military to civilian life is something that we at the Global UC feel strongly about.
